Direct consequence of the Bastion Point Land Occupation
The most significant consequence of the Maori occupation of Bastion Point was the return of Bastion Point and other land to Ngati Whatua. The Waitangi Tribunal had issued its recommendations to government of the return of the confiscated land to Ngati Whatua and compensation of $3million. The tribunal did also criticise the means of the Maori land occupation, however, it was the bold action that raised awareness of the land grievance, resulting in the return of what was rightfully Ngati Whatua’s. In July 1988 the Labour Government announced its return confiscated land, which was a direct consequence of the hard-fought occupation of 1977 and 1978.
